Tamil - A Classical Language

 Tamil is a Dravidian language spoken predominantly in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. It is one of the world's oldest and richest classical languages, with a literary history dating back over 2,000 years.

The Government of India has designated Tamil as a classical language. Tamil was designated a classical language in 2004 by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, India's then-President. The following characteristics are used to classify a language as classical:

Originality: Tamil literature, grammar, and other forms of artistic expression have a separate and autonomous tradition. Its own literary styles, lyrical forms, and grammatical norms have emerged.

Tamil has had a profound effect on the region's literary and cultural heritage. Other Dravidian languages, as well as Sanskrit and other Indian languages, have been impacted by it.

Literary brilliance: Tamil literature is renowned for its breadth, diversity, and aesthetic appeal. It contains traditional epics like as "Silappatikaram" and "Manimekalai," as well as works by notable poets such as Thiruvalluvar, Subramanya Bharathi, and Bharathidasan.

Tamil's designation as a classical language emphasizes its historical and cultural value, as well as its contribution to India's linguistic and literary history. It recognizes the Tamil language's ongoing history and its standing as one of the world's oldest and most dynamic classical languages.
